Imdur belongs to a class of drugs known as nitrates. It works by relaxing and widening blood vessels so blood can flow more easily to the heart. Imdur is used to prevent chest pain (angina) in patients with a certain heart condition (coronary artery disease). It will not treat an angina attack that has already begun. This medication may also be used with other drugs to improve the symptoms of heart failure (such as trouble breathing).
Take Imdur exactly as prescribed by your doctor. The recommended adult dose is 60 mg taken once daily in the morning after getting up. Your doctor may increase the dose to 120 mg once daily in the morning if necessary. To reduce the risk of headache, your doctor may suggest starting with 30 mg once daily each morning for the first 2 to 4 days. Swallow this medication whole with half a glass of water.
Before taking Imdur you should talk with your doctor if you have congestive heart failure, low blood pressure, kidney disease, anemia, dehydration. Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. This drug may make you dizzy. Do not drive or perform tasks that require alertness. Avoid getting up too fast from a sitting or lying position, or you may feel dizzy. Limit alcoholic beverages. Alcohol can increase some of the side effects.
You should not take Imdur if you are allergic to isosorbide-5-mononitrate or any ingredients of this medication, to other nitrates or nitrites, or if you have increased pressure inside the head, myocardial insufficiency due to obstruction, severe anemia.
Possible side effect
Get emergency medical help if you have abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, dizziness, lightheadedness, flushing of face and neck, gas, headache, increased sweating, nausea, restlessness, sensation of spinning, trouble sleeping, swelling of the face, tongue, throat, hives, trouble breathing, rapid heartbeat, blurred vision, chest pain, heartburn, dry mouth, joint or muscles pain. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor.
Tell your doctor about all other medications you use, especially: blood pressure medications (metoprolol, bumetanide, triamterene), dihydroergotamine, ergotamine, drugs for male erectile problems (tadalafil, vardenafil, sildenafil), beta-blockers (propranolol, bisoprolol, metoprolol, atenolol), calcium channel blockers (verapamil, felodipine, nifedipine, diltiazem), tricyclic antidepressants (trimipramine, nortriptyline, clomipramine, amitriptyline), protease inhibitors (saquinavir, indinavir, atazanavir). Interaction between two medications does not always mean that you must stop taking one of them. Tell your doctor or prescriber about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking.
Take the missed dose as soon as possible. Skip the missed dose if it is time for your next scheduled dose. Don't take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
If you think you have overdosed the medicine seek emergency medical help at once. The overdose symptoms are slow heartbeat, vision changes, severe nausea, vomiting, sweating, cold skin, bluish fingers, toes or lips.
Store the medicine at room temperature between 68-77 degrees F (20-25 degrees C) away from light and moisture. Do not store the drugs in the bathroom. Keep all drugs away from reach of children and pets.
